Medical Device Packaging - Die Cut Solutions

For nearly two decades, PDCI Medical (as Pacific Die Cut Industries) has been a leading outsourcing solutions provider for biomedical OEMs around the world. Both promising start-ups as well as prominent, global corporations have taken advantage of Pacific Die Cut Industries’ market proven experience, technical expertise and personalized customer attention. While our capabilities are constantly evolving to service the rapidly growing medical industry, we remain specialized in the following areas: precision die cutting, narrow-width slitting, multi-layer laminating, R&D/rapid prototyping, cleanroom assembly, packaging and turnkey projects. Pacific Die Cut Industries was the first West Coast die cutting company to achieve ISO standards.

Custom Packaging & Assembly

Over the years, PDCI Medical has broadened its range of expertise to include turn-key capabilities such as design, development and assembly of custom packaging systems tailored to meet the exacting needs of biomedical firms who seek to enhance the marketability of their products while streamlining their supply chains.

With constant pressures weighing on OEMs to contain packaging costs, PDCI Medical has developed a series of affordable packaging designs that will aid in reducing the cost associated with traditional packaging without compromising the security, sterility and performance of the packaging system.

SurgiKit™
The PDCI SurgiKit™ is a containment system for surgical and clinical devices and accessories used in the operating room and point-of-care applications. The system is comprised of one or multiple layers of medical grade HDPE sheeting which incorporates a series of customized apertures, creases and flaps to hold the components in place while the card itself is secured by unique features molded into a transparent bin.

Features and Benefits of SurgiKit™:

DESIGN: A highly experienced group of design engineers will evaluate your devices and quickly design and prototype a custom packaging solution at an affordable price.

SAFETY: Traditional pouching systems contain film layers that risk being punctured by sharp corners or burrs on the medical device. With the SurgiKit™ containment system, the thick wall of the thermoformed bin prevents such punctures and defects.

EFFICIENT SPACE UTILIZATION: Traditional thermoformed trays require thick dividing walls between packaged components to provide structural strength. This leads to inefficient space utilization. In contrast, the availability of multiple layers of separators and up to 6” of depth inside the SurgiKit affords a three dimensional, highly effective utilization of precious shelf or storage space for the packaged devices.

FUNCTIONALITY: The individual component layers can be removed one at a time, enabling staged removal and use of the packaged components. With the introduction of the third dimension in the bin, items can be held in place without the need for cumbersome clasps, restraining features and straps – a huge time-saver in an operating setting.

STERILE ENVIRONMENT: The SurgiKit™ is designed to preserve a sterile containment environment for packaged devices. This containment system can be removed from its outer Tyvek pouch in the surgical unit’s “grey room”, and then taken directly into the operating room. During surgery, the SurgiKit™ also serves as a convenient, non-contained bin providing quick and easy access to the devices and instruments.

SPECIAL APPLICATIONS: When used in conjunction with a pouch made from special barrier film materials, the SurgiKit™ containment system can be employed for sensitive applications requiring a dry, oxygen-free packaging environment.

TOLERANCES: Tight tolerances are difficult to achieve with thermoforming, making snap features either too tight or too loose. Both possibilities carry major risks in the event a part becomes dislodged or the lid opens too abruptly. Custom inserts can be consistently produced to tight tolerances, thus minimizing the risk associated with an ill-fitting enclosure system.

LOW COST: The combination of a customized fabricated card with a standard, off- the- shelf containment box results in a low cost but highly effective packaging system.

PDCI Medical also offers other design options where the SurgiKit™ may not be applicable:

INSERT ONLY: Insert and pouch combination may be used if a long and rigid device requires packaging - SurgiKit™ is optimal where parts are flexible and/or individual devices are of moderate length.. The insert-only configuration may also be appropriate if the target end user market calls for low-budget goods.

MOLDED TRAY ONLY: SurgiKit™ is the preferred choice for multiple accessories that have a requirement for a high performance, compact containment system. However, if you have a single product, PDCI Medical also offers custom thermoformed boxes with Tyvek/film pouches.
